SpectrumX invites US institutes of higher education (IHEs), research facilities, and industries to express their interest in acting as a Host Site for the 2026 SpectrumX REU+ Program funded by the NSF.
REUs are typically 10 weeks in duration (ideally late May to early August) and take place over the summer. REU modalities can vary, including:
-
- In-person, on-site summer REU over 8-10 weeks
-
- Hybrid summer REU over 8-10 weeks
-
- Full virtual summer REU implemented over 8-10 weeks
Selected Host Sites can host a minimum of two and a maximum of six undergraduate students participating in research in radio spectrum-related topics. These include, but are not limited to, computer engineering, computer science, data science, economics, education, electrical engineering, public policy, science communication, and spectrum management. Host Sites may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department REUs, as long as these have a well-defined common focus or coherent intellectual theme, and treat participating students as a cohort.
Host Sites will be required to provide a senior and near-to-peer mentor for each student; a clean, safe working environment and accommodation; orientation sessions to familiarize students with the culture of the Host Site; professional development training opportunities; and cohort-building activities.
SpectrumX will cover expenses for each student’s return travel, accommodation, meal allowance, and stipend at NSF REU rates.
Additional details can be found in the Host Site Information Sheet.
IHEs interested in acting as a Host Site for the 2026 SpectrumX NSF REU+ Program should indicate their interest to Anja Fourie at afourie@nrao.edu no later than 5:00 PM. ET on Friday, November 14, 2025.
Interested IHEs will be contacted directly by Anja Fourie to set-up a virtual information and Q&A session, and those wishing to continue as a Host Site will then be required to submit a brief application to SpectrumX.
