SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: Sub-THz Propagation Channels: Measurement\, Modeling\, and Impact on System Design
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to attend Andreas F. Molisch’s second Radio Shop Chat\, “Sub-THz Propagation Channels: Measurement\, Modeling\, and Impact on System Design\,” on Wednesday\, September 2 at 3 p.m. ET. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nWhile it had long been assumed that (sub-)THz channels show little multi-path propagation\, recent measurements have demonstrated the potential for rich multipath and thus significant dispersion in both delay and angle. This talk will briefly review several extensive measurement campaigns\, particularly in outdoor environments. It then discusses signal processing methods for their evaluations\, both Fourier-based and maximum-likelihood estimators\, as well as cluster-based models to compactly describe the extracted multipath. Finally\, the impact of the extracted results on required equalizer complexity in the receivers will be analyzed. The results demonstrate the possibility and necessity for tradeoffs in THz system design in a variety of situations\, such as limitations on the available modulation formats even in high-SNR situations\, and the need for per-subcarrier interference suppression.\nThis event is a follow-up to Molisch’s April Radio Shop Chat titled “Propagation Channel Measurements and Models for 6G in Urban Environments.” \nSpeaker Bio\nAndreas F. Molisch is the Solomon Golomb – Andrew and Erna Viterbi Chair and Professor at the University of Southern California (USC)\, where he also heads the Wireless Devices and Systems (WiDeS) group and the Center for Wireless Propagation Research (CWPR). Before joining USC in 2009\, he spent 10 years in industry\, including AT&T (Bell) Labs and Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs\, where he rose to Chief Wireless Standards Architect. His research interest is wireless communications\, with emphasis on wireless propagation channels\, multi-antenna systems\,  ultrawideband signaling and localization\, and novel modulation methods. He is the author of five books (including Wireless Communications\, 3rd ed. 2023)\, more than 750 papers\, and 80 patents; his work has been cited more than 80\,000 times; his h-index is 120. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors\, IEEE\, AAAS\, IET\, AAIA\, and URSI\, Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences\, and recipient of numerous awards.
