SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: Performance of Antenna-in-package (AiP) Designs at Millimeter Wave Frequencies
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to the next Radio Shop Chat\, “Performance of Antenna-in-package (AiP) Designs at Millimeter Wave Frequencies\,” featuring Rashaunda Henderson\, on Wednesday\, July 1 at 3 p.m. ET. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nAntenna-in-package (AiP) technology has become an important solution for next generation wireless systems. As the operating frequency of systems increases\, the size of the antennas decreases and to reduce losses\, interconnecting the die to the antenna at the package level has become a viable technique. This research has focused on the electrical and mechanical characterization of packaging substrates and over-mold compounds for antenna-in-package design and reliability. The research effort has culminated in the manufacturing of a slot bowtie antenna and E-shaped patch antenna designed to operate in G band which has frequency limits of 140-220 GHz. The antennas have been designed for characterization using a WR5 rectangular waveguide to package transition to eliminate any radiation that would be caused by a traditional ground-signal-ground (GSG) probe. Antenna input impedance bandwidth and radiation patterns will be presented for both GSG and waveguide fed antennas. In addition\, we will demonstrate the high-frequency properties of two dielectric materials (A and B) used in the fabrication process of a flip-chip enhanced quad flat no-leads package (FCeQFN) using free-space quasi-optical spectrometer (FSQS) technique. The materials are Ajinomoto Build-up Film-based laminates that drive the FCeQFN technology. Material A and B show an average dielectric constant of 3.33 and 3.45\, respectively\, with an average loss tangent of 0.01 across the G band. \nSpeaker Bio\nRashaunda Henderson is a professor in the ECE department at the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson\, TX. She received her B.S degree in electrical engineering from Tuskegee University in 1992 and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor\, MI\, in 1994 and 1999\, respectively. She joined Motorola Semiconductor Product Sector in Tempe\, AZ (now NXP Semiconductors) and worked as a research and development device engineer focusing on passive circuit integration in the microwave and mixed-signal technology labs for wireless embedded systems. She joined UT Dallas in 2007 as an Assistant Professor in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. Henderson is the co-founder of the High Frequency Circuits and Systems Laboratory\, which facilitates millimeter-wave design and development of circuits\, integrated packages\, and antennas for wireless communication systems. She has co-authored more than 100 journal and conference papers focusing on packaging and integration for high-frequency applications. Henderson is a Senior Member of the IEEE and served as the 2022 President of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) Administrative Committee. She is passionate about educating the next generation of students and encouraging them to seek careers in science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics.

SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: The National Radio Quiet Zone Telecommunication Challenge
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to the next Radio Shop Chat\, “The National Radio Quiet Zone Telecommunication Challenge\,” featuring Dennis Roberson\, on Wednesday\, August 5 at 3 p.m. ET. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nThe National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) represents a unique telecommunications environment where the operational requirements of critical federal facilities must coexist with growing imperatives for access to broadband services by consumers\, businesses\, critical infrastructure\, and emergency services. This talk examines the fundamental tension between increasing telecommunications dependencies across society and the increasing operational sensitivities of federal installations that require electromagnetic protection. Through analysis of current conditions\, modernization options\, and feasibility assessments\, it will be demonstrated that significant telecommunications improvements are technically achievable within the NRQZ\, though implementation remains constrained primarily by economic factors rather than technical limitations. Terrestrial mobile broadband and satellite-based solutions are evaluated as primary modernization pathways\, while identifying emerging risks from satellite emissions and autonomous systems. The primary recommendation is for the prioritization of terrestrial mobile broadband infrastructure while establishing frameworks for managing interference risks from evolving technologies. Areas where additional analysis is needed to sustain this activity are identified at the end of the talk. \nSpeaker Bio\nDennis Roberson is the founder\, president\, chief executive officer\, and a member of Roberson and Associates\, LLC\, and has over 40 years of industry experience. He also served as the vice provost for research and as a research professor in computer science and in the law school at Illinois Institute of Technology\, where he was an active researcher in the wireless networking arena. He was a co-founder of IIT’s Wireless Network and Communications Research Center (WiNCom)\, and a co-founder of the Intellectual Property Management and Markets Program in the law school. His wireless research focused on dynamic spectrum access networks\, spectrum measurement systems\, spectrum management\, and wireless interference and its mitigation. \nPreviously\, Roberson was executive vice president and chief technology officer at Motorola. He had an extensive corporate career\, which included major business and technology responsibilities at IBM\, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC\, now part of Hewlett Packard)\, AT&T\, and NCR. He has been involved with a wide variety of technology organizations\, including currently serving as the chair of the External Advisory Board for SpectrumX and chair of the Marconi Society Board. His government service included chairing the Federal Communications Commission Technical Advisory Council for eight years\, serving on the TAC for 22 years\, and membership on the Commerce Spectrum Management Advisory Committee. Roberson currently serves on the governing and/or advisory boards of several exciting technology-based companies. SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: Sub-THz Propagation Channels: Measurement\, Modeling\, and Impact on System Design
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to attend Andreas F. Molisch’s second Radio Shop Chat\, “Sub-THz Propagation Channels: Measurement\, Modeling\, and Impact on System Design\,” on Wednesday\, September 2 at 3 p.m. ET. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nWhile it had long been assumed that (sub-)THz channels show little multi-path propagation\, recent measurements have demonstrated the potential for rich multipath and thus significant dispersion in both delay and angle. This talk will briefly review several extensive measurement campaigns\, particularly in outdoor environments. It then discusses signal processing methods for their evaluations\, both Fourier-based and maximum-likelihood estimators\, as well as cluster-based models to compactly describe the extracted multipath. Finally\, the impact of the extracted results on required equalizer complexity in the receivers will be analyzed. The results demonstrate the possibility and necessity for tradeoffs in THz system design in a variety of situations\, such as limitations on the available modulation formats even in high-SNR situations\, and the need for per-subcarrier interference suppression.\nThis event is a follow-up to Molisch’s April Radio Shop Chat titled “Propagation Channel Measurements and Models for 6G in Urban Environments.” \nSpeaker Bio\nAndreas F. Molisch is the Solomon Golomb – Andrew and Erna Viterbi Chair and Professor at the University of Southern California (USC)\, where he also heads the Wireless Devices and Systems (WiDeS) group and the Center for Wireless Propagation Research (CWPR). Before joining USC in 2009\, he spent 10 years in industry\, including AT&T (Bell) Labs and Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs\, where he rose to Chief Wireless Standards Architect. His research interest is wireless communications\, with emphasis on wireless propagation channels\, multi-antenna systems\,  ultrawideband signaling and localization\, and novel modulation methods. He is the author of five books (including Wireless Communications\, 3rd ed. 2023)\, more than 750 papers\, and 80 patents; his work has been cited more than 80\,000 times; his h-index is 120. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors\, IEEE\, AAAS\, IET\, AAIA\, and URSI\, Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences\, and recipient of numerous awards.
