SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: Sub-THz Propagation Channels: Measurement\, Modeling\, and Impact on System Design
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to attend Andreas F. Molisch’s second Radio Shop Chat\, “Sub-THz Propagation Channels: Measurement\, Modeling\, and Impact on System Design\,” on Wednesday\, September 2 at 3 p.m. ET. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nWhile it had long been assumed that (sub-)THz channels show little multi-path propagation\, recent measurements have demonstrated the potential for rich multipath and thus significant dispersion in both delay and angle. This talk will briefly review several extensive measurement campaigns\, particularly in outdoor environments. It then discusses signal processing methods for their evaluations\, both Fourier-based and maximum-likelihood estimators\, as well as cluster-based models to compactly describe the extracted multipath. Finally\, the impact of the extracted results on required equalizer complexity in the receivers will be analyzed. The results demonstrate the possibility and necessity for tradeoffs in THz system design in a variety of situations\, such as limitations on the available modulation formats even in high-SNR situations\, and the need for per-subcarrier interference suppression.\nThis event is a follow-up to Molisch’s April Radio Shop Chat titled “Propagation Channel Measurements and Models for 6G in Urban Environments.” \nSpeaker Bio\nAndreas F. Molisch is the Solomon Golomb – Andrew and Erna Viterbi Chair and Professor at the University of Southern California (USC)\, where he also heads the Wireless Devices and Systems (WiDeS) group and the Center for Wireless Propagation Research (CWPR). Before joining USC in 2009\, he spent 10 years in industry\, including AT&T (Bell) Labs and Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs\, where he rose to Chief Wireless Standards Architect. His research interest is wireless communications\, with emphasis on wireless propagation channels\, multi-antenna systems\,  ultrawideband signaling and localization\, and novel modulation methods. He is the author of five books (including Wireless Communications\, 3rd ed. 2023)\, more than 750 papers\, and 80 patents; his work has been cited more than 80\,000 times; his h-index is 120. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors\, IEEE\, AAAS\, IET\, AAIA\, and URSI\, Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences\, and recipient of numerous awards.

SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: Propagation Channel Measurements and Models for 6G in Urban Environments
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to the next Radio Shop Chat\, “Propagation Channel Measurements and Models for 6G in Urban Environments\,” featuring Andreas F. Molisch on Wednesday\, April 1 at 3 p.m. ET. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nThe increasing demand for existing wireless services\, and the emergence of new ones\, requires a re-assessment of the use of spectrum for different purposes. A prerequisite for any such evaluation is knowledge about how wireless signals propagate in the different frequency ranges\, as this impacts both the fitness of a particular spectrum for a particular purpose\, and impacts potential interference with incumbent services in the same or adjacent bands. This talk will discuss recent propagation measurements and resulting models in urban environments. Showcasing some of the recent results in our group that elucidate previously unknown channel properties and demonstrate the ongoing importance of new channel measurements. We firstly show results from a massive distributed-MIMO measurement campaign that not only provides physical insights into potentially corrected propagation processes\, but also led to a new channel model\, called CUNEC\, that in a self-consistent\, measurement-based manner characterizes correlated pathloss between (arbitrarily many) UE-AP links. In the 6-18 GHz range\, recent ultrawideband measurements from our group indicate the special importance of urban vegetation. which shows a distinct change over FR3\, and suggest the distinction between line of sight (LOS)\, obstructed line of sight (OLOS)\, and non-line of sight (NLOS).  For the 145 GHz range\, we will discuss our results from measurement campaigns and their evaluation with high-resolution parameter estimation\, demonstrating that the standard assumptions of the 3GPP model are not consistent with the measured physical reality at this band. We also demonstrate a new channel sounder that can dramatically speed up directionally resolved measurements at frequency bands above ~30 GHz. Finally\, we will point out limitations of current models for line of sight probability\, which significantly impact interference analysis\, and discuss improvements. The needs for further work in this area will be discussed in conclusion. \nSpeaker Bio\nAndreas F. SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: The Untold History of 'Harmful Interference' in the Regulation of Radio Frequency Communications
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to the next Radio Shop Chat\, “The Untold History of ‘Harmful Interference’ in the Regulation of Radio Frequency Communications\,” featuring Peter Tenhula on Wednesday\, February 4 at 3 p.m. ET. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nA key\, universal concept used in the international and domestic regulation of radio frequency communications is “harmful interference.” While “interference” was a recognized concern from the earliest days of wireless telegraphy\, it took several decades—until the late 1940s—for regulators to adopt a formal definition of “harmful interference.” This definition\, modified slightly in the 1950s and 1970s\, is still in place today. Harmful interference and related terminology are often criticized as cryptic\, vague\, amorphous\, and ambiguous\, resulting in excessive regulatory uncertainty and delays. The general frustration with the definition’s qualitative nature has led to demands for more quantitative approaches to assessing when interference is “harmful” and when it is not. In a recent article published in the Colorado Journal of Technology Law\, Peter Tenhula (along with his co-author\, Carl Frank) explores the previously untold history of these regulatory concepts and definitions. The presentation will provide an overview of the article and discuss two eras: During the first era (from the early 1900s to the 1940s)\, interference concepts were not specifically defined in any way. The second era (from 1947 through the 1980s) was the period in which regulatory definitions were developed within small groups of technical experts at international radio conferences without much attention or controversy. Domestic regulators in the U.S. implemented these definitions without much\, if any\, deliberation. This comprehensive study of the original context\, usage\, and definitions of these regulatory terms of art sheds new light on the modern-day critiques of the longstanding vocabulary. \nSpeaker Bio\nPeter Tenhula currently serves as the Senior Fellow of the Spectrum Policy Initiative at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Silicon Flatirons Center for Law\, Technology & Entrepreneurship. Tenhula retired from federal government service in 2021\, having worked for nearly 25 years at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). From 2014 to April 2021\, Tenhula served as Deputy Associate Administrator in NTIA’s Office of Spectrum Management (OSM). He also served as the Chair of the Interdepartment Radio Advisory Committee (IRAC). Prior to joining OSM\, Tenhula was a Senior Advisor in NTIA’s Office of the Assistant Secretary. Before joining NTIA in 2012\, Tenhula worked at Shared Spectrum Company (SSC)\, serving as the company’s vice president and general counsel. While at SSC\, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Wireless Innovation Forum and chaired its Regulatory Committee. From 1990 to 2006\, Tenhula held several positions at the FCC\, including Acting Deputy Chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau\, director and co-director of the Spectrum Policy Task Force\, Senior Legal Advisor to FCC Chairman Michael Powell\, Special Counsel to General Counsel William Kennard\, and staff attorney in the Office of General Counsel and the Mass Media Bureau. He received his undergraduate degree in telecommunications from Indiana University\, Bloomington\, and earned a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis\, Missouri.

SUMMARY:Radio Shop Chat: Views of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine on Agenda Items at Issue at the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027
DESCRIPTION:NSF SpectrumX invites you to the next Radio Shop Chat\, “Views of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine on Agenda Items at Issue at the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027\,” featuring Nathaniel Livesey and Scott Paine on Wednesday\, August 6 at 3 p.m. EDT. \nRegistration is required and free. \nAbstract\nPeriodically—currently every four years—the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) convenes a World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) to revise the Radio Regulations\, an internationally agreed treaty that governs radio spectrum use\, including frequency allocations and technical standards.  Each WRC also sets the agenda and preliminary agenda for the next two WRCs\, initiating a study cycle towards future revisions of the radio regulations at these upcoming meetings. \nThe U.S. National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine has produced a consensus study report analyzing the impact of agenda items under consideration for WRC-2027 (and preliminary agenda items for WRC-2031) upon scientific use of the radio spectrum.  Much of the WRC-2027 agenda is driven by the rapid developments taking place in non-terrestrial telecommunications networks supported by non-geostationary satellites in low Earth orbit.  These developments pose significant challenges to Earth remote sensing and radio astronomy. \nIn this presentation\, we will provide a summary briefing on this report\, entitled “Views of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine on Agenda Items at Issue at the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027.” \nBios\nNathaniel Livesey is an atmospheric scientist and the principal investigator for the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) instrument on the Earth Observing System Aura spacecraft at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Livesey served as the Chair of the National Academies’ Committee on the Views of the World Radiocommunication Conference\, 2027. Livesey’s research interests are centered on space-based microwave observations of the chemistry\, hydrology\, and dynamics of Earth’s atmosphere. Most of Livesey’s work has focused on the MLS experiments both on Aura and the earlier Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) launched in 1991. Before becoming Aura MLS principal investigator (PI)\, Livesey was responsible for the MLS “retrieval” algorithms. These convert the raw observations of the microwave signature of the atmosphere into measurements of atmospheric composition\, temperature\, humidity\, and cloud ice. Livesey earned a DPhil in physics from Oxford University\, England. \n \nScott Paine is a senior physicist in the Radio and Geoastronomy division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. Paine served as the Vice-chair of the National Academies’ Committee on the Views of the World Radiocommunication Conference\, 2027. Paine has been affiliated with the Submillimeter Array radio interferometer on Maunakea\, Hawaii\, since its original development and construction. In addition\, Paine is a member of the collaboration and project teams for CMB-S4\, the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background experiment. Paine’s research interests include advancing instrumentation and techniques for radio astronomy\, and measuring\, understanding\, and statistically characterizing radiative properties of Earth’s atmosphere having broad importance for optimizing astronomical observations\, remote sensing\, and modeling of Earth’s climate system. Paine earned a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
