TWG

TalentED

The TWG is committed conducting public outreach, developing educational resources, and expanding research engagement opportunities to support the development of a competitive spectrum workforce with transferable skills necessary for a rapidly changing workplace and society.

Scope and Goal

The TalentED Working Group (TWG) is committed to facilitating student engagement, professional development, and public outreach within the context of spectrum technology and research. Through targeted programming and resource development, the TWG aims to build spectrum awareness in the general public and facilitate the development of a globally engaged US STEM workforce. By leveraging the collective capacity of NSF SpectrumX member institutions, the TWG supports the cultivation of the next generation of spectrum experts and leaders by expanding access to education resources and hands-on experiences.

To reach these goals, the TWG has three main tracks:

  • Professional and Career Development – To support Center members’ career advancement, the TWG provides mentoring support for faculty, staff, and graduate students and offers STEM-specific training sessions and workshops to the Center at large, with a specific focus on supporting student and early-career professionals.
  • Public Outreach – The TWG’s public engagement efforts can serve as a crucial introduction to spectrum use, research, and policy. By increasing the general public’s understanding of what spectrum is and the critical ways spectrum technology impacts our daily lives, the TWG can promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the radio spectrum and encourage a wider range of individuals to consider pursuing spectrum-related education and career paths.

The TWG carries out its public outreach efforts through the Citizen Science project, tabling at K-12 conferences and events, and recruiting new schools and partners to engage with the Center.

Projects

NSF SpectrumX’s Summer School on wireless communications is designed to promote early research by engaging undergraduate students in fun and interactive learning about wireless networks and the radio spectrum they use.

As part of its initiative to develop curriculum for higher education, NSF SpectrumX has created a set of Radio Frequency Systems and Applications videos. This collection of videos serves as […]

This project offers an opportunity for everyone to contribute as a scientist. To effectively manage the radio spectrum for the benefit of all, it is essential to understand the geographic […]

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs support active, inclusive research participation by registered undergraduate students in areas of research that are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Lessons were created during a summer teacher experience that was part of a collaboration between NSF SpectrumX and NRAO SuperKnova. Educators were recruited from across the US and its territories […]

Obtaining accurate wireless broadband maps is important for a multitude of commercial and scientific reasons, including determining the actual broadband coverage provided by wireless carriers, monitoring the health of broadband […]
