Abstract

Many applications such as distributed beamforming, geo-positioning and distributed base stations require exquisite synchronization. However, the timing uncertainties of current synchronization standards (PTP, IEEE 1588, >1ns) limits applications to the symbol level. In this work, we develop a novel two-way time transfer (TWTT) synchronization protocol that can achieve picoseconds-level accuracy, allowing for RF-carrier synchronization. This protocol will be used with a Synthetic Aperture Source Localization (SASL) method to locate high frequency wireless sources.
