Making libraries practically useable in the AI-coding age: ReadMe.LLM

Abstract

RF-Spectrum-related software work is always going to be relatively niche, and rely on the use of multiple niche libraries. Meanwhile, large language models (LLMs) and ‚Äúvibe coding‚Äù have changed developer expectations. The first draft of any project now is done using an LLM. Exploring DigitalRF, we find that even top LLMs are very bad at zero-shot use of software libraries, even when able to search the web where the library might be well documented. Human-oriented documentation and examples don’t reliably work either. Fortunately, crafting LLM-oriented documentation ‚Äî a ReadMe.LLM ‚Äî can work and is arguably essential for impact and the workforce.
