SpectrumX, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Spectrum Innovation Center, is pleased to announce that Verizon has joined its Collaboration Advisory Board (CAB).
Verizon is one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, offering wireless, internet, television, and phone services to consumer, commercial, and public-sector customers. Through continual innovation efforts, Verizon strives to provide customers with the services and security they need today while also developing technology to support future connectivity needs.
“Millions of people rely on Verizon’s network every day, but sustaining that level of performance requires constant innovation in how we think about and utilize spectrum,” said Will Johnson, senior vice president and deputy general counsel, regulatory affairs and international public policy. “By joining the SpectrumX Collaboration Advisory Board, we look forward to partnering with the nation’s top academic researchers to bridge the gap between lab innovation and real-world deployment—laying the groundwork for everything from AI to integrated sensing with 5G advanced and 6G.”
The partnership will allow Verizon to share information about the spectrum challenges it faces directly with the Center’s ready-made pool of experts, enabling multidisciplinary, collaborative problem-solving.
Verizon is the first major mobile network operator to join the NSF SpectrumX CAB, complementing existing memberships from organizations throughout the wireless sector.
“Given the pervasiveness of cellular technologies and services in all our daily lives, it is important for our Center to factor in the spectrum considerations of companies offering these services as part of our research and workforce development initiatives,” said Center director J. Nicholas Laneman. “Having key stakeholders like Verizon directly engaged in NSF SpectrumX helps us maintain a balanced and objective perspective as we develop new technology and policy options for 6G and beyond.”
Organizations that join the CAB support SpectrumX’s research, education, and workforce development efforts by:
- Presenting challenges and industry needs to the NSF SpectrumX community. This can be done in CAB meetings, individual meetings with researchers or program leadership, or at regularly scheduled meetings (e.g., Working Group meetings, Center meetings).
- Participating in SpectrumX meetings and events in-person, virtually, or asynchronously. The agreement also enables researchers and students to visit CAB facilities, and vice versa, to build relationships and knowledge of needs, challenges, and innovations.
- Interacting with SpectrumX community members, from research partners and leadership to SpectrumX-affiliated students. CAB members are also encouraged to review interim and annual reports to learn more about the research being conducted and achieved through the SpectrumX Center.
SpectrumX CAB is considering applications from interested organizations on a rolling basis. Please visit SpectrumX’s Get Involved page to learn more about getting involved with the center.
